I am happy to talk through your options with you. Please contact me here and we can arrange a time to discuss your concerns.
In general, a psychoeducational evaluation is most helpful when there are primary concerns about a child's performance in school. These evaluations help determine how children learn best as well as help rule in our out the presence of learning disorders (e.g., dyslexia), ADHD, anxiety, depression, and/or other barriers to learning.
During our first contact, we will discuss whether an initial consultation is needed. If so, this would be an approximately 60-minute session for parents (and/or young adults in the case of college-aged students) only. During this session we discuss your concerns and any relevant background information.
Evaluations consist of (1) a one-on-one testing appointment and (2) a feedback conference.
During the one-on-one testing appointment, your child will complete a series of tests designed to help answer the referral question(s). These tests typically include cognitive (IQ) tests, achievement tests in reading, writing, and math, and self-report measures. This appointment typically lasts between 3-5 hours depending on the student's age, the number of breaks needed, and other factors. Most children can complete all necessary testing in one day, though sometimes it is deemed beneficial to break the session into two different appointments. Parents may wait on site or leave and return later.
The feedback conference is for parents/guardians only, unless the student is a young adult or we make other arrangements. This appointment typically lasts between 1 - 1.5 hours and involves a discussion of the evaluation results and recommended next steps.
The full written report would then be generated and is typically available to you in approximately 2-3 weeks (sometimes earlier).
It is best to give your child a simple and developmentally appropriate explanation prior to coming. Young children can be told that they will be working with someone to figure out how they learn best. They will be working on activities such as doing puzzles and answering questions as well as more familiar tasks in reading, writing and math. Older children often already have a sense that they are struggling in school, so you can explain to them that they will be working with someone who will help them understand why they are struggling in school. The goal will be to figure out how they learn and how to make school easier and more enjoyable. Most children find this one-on-one time enjoyable.
It is generally best to share the evaluation plans with your child at least one day in advance. They should get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on the morning of testing. If your child takes medication, please make sure he or she takes the medication on the morning of testing.
If you have not already submitted or sent them, please bring all of your intake forms, behavioral questionnaires, previous psychological evaluations, old report cards, teacher progress notes, any standardized testing scores, scores from end of grade testing and results of previous psychoeducational testing. Early elementary records are particularly important.
Your child should bring a jacket or sweatshirt, water, and snacks. If they are used to eating lunch before 12:00, please notify me and we can discuss weather we need to take a break for lunch.
Evaluations are billed at one flat rate of $2,200.
I do not currently accept health insurance and am considered out-of-network by all insurance companies. Many insurance companies classify psychoeducational evaluations as "educational" rather than "medical," which often results in limited or no coverage. It is highly recommended that you contact your insurance company directly to inquire about your specific policy's coverage before scheduling an evaluation. Common CPT (billing) codes to assist with inquiries about coverage include 96130, 96131, 96136, and 96137, and 90791. I am happy to provide an itemized invoice upon request to assist you with filing a claim. Please let me know in advance if you require this documentation.
I collect evaluation fees at the parent feedback conference. I accept cash, checks, major credit cards, and HSA cards.
